How to increase your Twitter followers

August 19th, 2010

I am being asked more and more “How can I increase my Twitter followers” so I decided to put a list together to share with the world.

  • Ensure you complete your profile including your bio, website address link etc. Don’t expect people to follow you if they don’t know who you are or what you do
  • Follow people with influence in your industry and watch what they do, don’t copy their tweets but this will help you gauge what will work
  • Put your Twitter link everywhere, your website, Delicious, LinkedIn, Blog, Email Signature, E-newsletters, Business Cards, Invoices, Quotes and other Social and Business networking websites
  • Ask existing followers to retweet your tweets – use http://www.retweetist.com/ to keep track of your retweets
  • Thank people for retweets – isn’t it nice when someone says thanks and wouldn’t you be more likely to retweet if you were thanked
  • Retweet posts from people you are following – if you are seen to retweet people will be more likely to retweet your posts
  • If business account don’t forget it’s called “Social” Networking so put a bit of you into it, post not only about the business but also about things that may interest you. People buy from people at the end of the day
  • Use #hashtag for popular terms or things that may be of interest – this will help create categories for tweets, see http://support.twitter.com/articles/49309-what-are-hashtags-symbols for more information on #hashtags
  • Keep an eye on trending topics and include them  in tweets if possible and relevant to do so – if your tweet is included in the trending topics list it will help make your profile visibility
  • Take pictures – use http://www.twitpic.com/  to upload them
  • Be current, tweet about things as they happen. If you see an article in the paper, tweet about it straight away, be seen as the person that is on the ball with the most relevant and up to date information
  • Introduce competitions – great way to attract attention
  • Remember word of mouth, ask prospects or existing clients to follow you

Happy tweeting :-)
